What I can help you with

A non-directive space where your own insight leads the way

I don’t follow a script or push you through worksheets. Every session follows your lead — I’m here to reflect, hold space, and help you see patterns you might not have noticed.

About my approach
01

Anxiety & panic

Calm your nervous system, understand triggers, and rebuild confidence to face uncertainty.

02

Trauma & PTSD

Trauma-informed work that moves at your pace, never faster than you’re ready for.

03

Depression & low mood

Compassionate exploration to lift the fog and reconnect with what matters to you.

04

Bereavement & loss

Grief without judgment, on your own terms and timeline — not a set of stages.

05

Relationship difficulties

Understanding the patterns that repeat in how you connect with, and detach from, others.

Claire Whitfield

COSCA Registered Counsellor

Person-centred, trauma-informed, and genuinely non-directive

I’ve been practising counselling in Edinburgh since 2012. Before training as a counsellor I worked in social care, and that background shapes how I work: with patience, without judgment, and with deep respect for your autonomy.

My sessions are open-ended conversations, not clinical assessments. You bring what’s on your mind. I listen deeply and reflect honestly. Over time, something starts to shift.

What clients say

Honest reflections from people who’ve been where you are

★★★★★
“I’d never felt able to talk about what happened. Claire created something I’d never had before — a space where I didn’t need to perform being okay.”
— Anonymous, trauma work
★★★★★
“Non-directive really does mean non-directive. He never steered me anywhere. That felt revolutionary after years of being told what to think.”
— Anonymous, anxiety and identity
Getting started

Three steps to your first session

01

Book a free 20-minute call

No clinical intake form. We just talk to see if we feel right for each other. If not, I’ll always try to refer you on.

02

First full session (50 min)

We explore what’s brought you here. You lead. Some people find just this session clarifying on its own.

03

Ongoing at your own pace

Weekly or fortnightly. Short-term (6 sessions) or open-ended. Some clients see me for years.

Taking the first step is the hardest part
